• WHAT IS ATHEROTHROMBOSIS ?

Most people don't know about atherothrombosis - a dangerous condition that leads to heart attack, stroke and peripheral vascular disease.

In Singapore, there are signs that the ailments is afflicting younger adults and not just older people, as was the pattern in the past. Atherothrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms on ruptured fatty deposits within the arteries, blocking or obstructing blood flow.

"Though we usually see it in the older age group, we are now seeing atherothrombosis in people in their 30s," said Gleneagles Hospital senior cardiologist Peter Yan. He said it is never too early to start paying attention to the risk factors and minimise the chances of developing atherothrombosis.
